Black Sheep Bodega Terri Black - Textile Art

I have always enjoyed any artform that is tactile. Clay, papier-mache, plaster of paris, wire sculpting and the likes, have always attracted me.
In 2015 I discovered the ancient, and magical art of making felt. Partnered with my love for all things textile, I began exploring combinations of needle felting, embroidery, and applique to create the details.
The Bodega’s predecessor, Black Sheep Card Shop, was an opportunity to produce and sell note cards from photographs of original artwork. My first Market in 2023 taught me two things – I love connecting with people who connect with my art. And, I wanted to offer original pieces of my work for those who do.
"I've Gone to Join the Circus" Wet felting, needle felting and embroidery. 12"x 18" (approx.)
If I can get a needle and thread into it, I can transform a photograph into a personal piece of art.
"Murano Laundry Day" Image transfer on cotton with embroidery. 8" x 11"
"We'll Always Have Paris" Wet felting, needle felting and embroidery.
10" x 14"
Creating a felted vessel requires a symbiotic relationship between myself and the wool.
The fibres let me know where they want to go.
I just help get them there.
I use thin layers of fine roving wool and other fibres to create the shade.
A small light placed in the bottom highlights the fibres and create a lovely mood to a room.
Embroidery hoops provide a perfect frame for smaller pieces of art.
Watching people of all ages "interact" with my felting projects inspired the idea for Fidget Felt! These little textile objects are made from leftover pieces of felt and are perfect for my fellow fidgeter!
Black Sheep Bodega donates the proceeds of Fidget Felt to one of the many food banks in Hamilton. Fidgets feed!
The Black Sheep Bodega began as the Black Sheep Card Shop, a home that provided the opportunity to photograph my work and create cards and related products.

So much joy to be found creating what is puttering in my imagination.
I enjoy things that you can put things into!
... I'm going to let it shine!
Two pieces of felt, three vessels.
My first commission.
Who doesn't love blue?
This was not even close to what I intended. And yet, it works!

... and does it matter?
